Google, in partnership with MTN Nigeria, Infinix Mobile and Jumia have launched Android One program in Nigeria and five other African countries. The purpose is to provide high quality smartphones of great use at affordable prices to millions of people in Africa and to also boost user’s experience in the use of internet by focusing on software application, platforms and connectivity.
And the first Android One smartphone in Africa is the Infinix Hot 2. Its already selling on Jumia at N17,500 for the 1GB RAM version and N19,500 for the 2GB version. The device has a 5- inch 720p display, a 220mAh battery with power saving features, a 13 megapixel rear camera, a 2 megapixel front facing shooter, 16 GB of expandable storage, dual SIM slots, a quad-core MediaTek processor and FM radio tuner. It runs on the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop, and will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow soon after it is released.
MTN’s part in the program is to reduce data cost for those who buy the Infinix Hot 2 Android One smartphone by giving them 1 GB high speed data at N500 for 12 months, accompanied by latest Android platform updates for free. The device is available for purchase in Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco and Nigeria. As it is in Nigeria, the device will also be selling on Jumia for the remaining five African countries.
