Marvel Chief Shuts Down “Blade” Talk

Over the weekend an off-hand quote from actress Kate Beckinsale took on a life of its own. The comment indicated that, at one point, the producers behind the “Underworld” franchise wanted to incorporate Marvel comic character Blade into the series.

She also indicated that they were turned down by Marvel as the comic film label already had plans for the vampire hunter after having only just scored back the rights to him not that long ago. So what are those plans? Turns out it’s nothing according to Marvel chief Kevin Feige.

Feige, speaking with press following last night’s screening of 15 minutes of “Doctor Strange,” says there is nothing ‘imminent’ happening on “Blade”. He tells The Playlist:

They [the ‘Underworld’ producers] did ask a long time ago and I think our answer was, ‘No, we’ll do something with ‘Blade’ at some point.’ That’s still the answer. We still think he’s a great character. He’s a really fun character. We think this movie going into a different side of the universe would have the potential to have him pop up, but between the movies, the Netflix shows, the ABC shows there are so many opportunities for the character to pop up as you’re now seeing with Ghost Rider on ‘AGENTS of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ that rather than team up with another studio on that character let’s do something on our own. What that is? Where that will be? We’ll see. There is nothing imminent to my knowledge.”

How successful the “SHIELD” experiment with “Ghost Rider” is going is unclear at this point, but it is being seen as an obvious testing pad for other second-tier Marvel heroes and characters to make an appearance in the MCU.
