Nigeria is the most active Facebook user in Africa, according to statistics released by the giant social network on Thursday. The report ascertained that the number of monthly active users in the most populous country in Africa as at June 2015 was 15 million, all via mobile. Next to Nigeria is South Africa with 12 mil-lion monthly active users and Kenya, with 4.5 million active users accordingly.
Facebook opened its African office in Johannesburg this June, as the continent’s growing popu-lation and relatively low levels of internet access, present a large untapped market for the social network to earn advertising revenue.
So far, its active user population in Africa has grown by 20 percent, from 100 million in Septem-ber 2014. Though a large portion of the new users are from North Africa. Facebook says with its active user advertising partnerships in Africa, it would use the new office in Johannesburg to ex-pand its business across the continent.
