Scientists accidentally made a battery that lasts forever

RESEARCHERS have discovered a brand-new type of battery that could last forever.Battery technology has had a major breakthrough – by accident.

Scientists have discovered a new type of battery that could improve almost every gadget you own.

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine claim to have created a never-ending battery.

Unlike current battery technology, the scientists claim the latest battery can be charged and re-charged hundreds of thousands of times without ever losing performance.

That means the battery-life of your favourite smartphone, tablet or laptop would not deplete over time.

Incredibly – the discovery was made by total accident by Mya Le Thai, a PhD candidate at the university.

Her team were testing nanowires – a material that is several thousand times thinner than a human hair. Because this wire is so delicate it usually breaks after a number charging cycles.

However during one of the tests, the fragile tech was smothered in a type of gel which made it tougher and more durable.

Speaking about the findings Richard Penner, chairman of UCI’s chemistry department, said: “Mya was playing around and she coated this whole thing with a very thin gel layer and started to cycle it.

“She discovered that just by using this gel she could cycle it hundreds of thousands of times without losing any capacity.

“That was crazy, because these things typically die in dramatic fashion after 5,000 or 6,000 or 7,000 cycles at most.”
