What won’t people do for Game of Thrones? Not much, apparently, including downloading the HBO app from iTunes, even if it sets fans back $15. According to App Annie, the HBO iOS app is the most profitable in the market, despite having been launched just two months ago. Launched exclusively for Apple devices, the HBO app requires a minimum three-month subscription, meaning viewers must be ready to commit to the service. But with the brilliant marketing ploy of offering one month free, it seems HBO has ensnared its fair share of buyers, grossing “maximum revenue worldwide” during the month of May.
In doing so, HBO beat out other marginally less expensive streaming service apps like Hulu and Spotify (which cost $13 and $8, respectively) for the number one spot, and it may be that its popularity stems from its stand-alone availability for Apple devices. To access HBO from other outlets like Optimum and SlingTV, viewers must bundle the service with another package, like Internet or additional channels. So if all you’re interested in is the fate of Jon Snow and company, Apple is still the way to go, which is clearly driving numerous fans to the iTunes Store.
